The Sales Stoic

April 23rd - You control your reaction

5 min

Actionable tips:

  • Remind yourself that while you can’t control outcomes, you can control your reaction. Before each call, set an intention to focus on being calm and resourceful.
  • When things feel overwhelming, take a moment to breathe deeply and refocus on what you can influence, your thoughts and responses.

“You are made of three parts—body, breath, and mind. The first two are simply in your care, but only the third truly belongs to you.” - Marcus Aurelius

So much is out of our control: prospects’ decisions, market shifts, competition, etc. But your mindset? That’s entirely yours.

Top performers don’t waste energy on what they can’t change.

They focus on mastering their reactions, staying adaptable, and controlling the controllables.

When a deal falls through or a client goes dark, remind yourself: your response is your power.

Stay steady, stay focused, and own your mindset. Resilience starts in the mind.

Remember you will die.

Every breath you take Every move you make Every single day, every line I pray Every breath you take That was all in one breath as well. Very impressive diaphragm. It's the 23rd of April, the one thing you truly own. I'm not talking about the goat, I'm talking about...

this. You have been formed of three parts, body, breath and mind. Of these, the first two are yours in so far as they are only in your care. The third alone is truly yours. So I want to talk about breath. because it's such an important reminder. So many people are rushing through their sales calls, they're struggling to get through a sentence, they're nervous, they're panicky, their pace is all the way off. Actually, slow down. Just stop for a minute and it all starts and ends with breaths in life, in the grand scheme of things. And actually like reminding yourself to breathe and be present and take that moment back a moment. That's so, powerful when it comes to like the next call or the next moment.

Um, what, kind of breath work do you do? I'm confess to something. Okay. Okay. I'm a sinner. I'm a cold plunge wanker. In camera two? I'm a cold plunge bad person. And in camera three, one more time, please. a cold plunge crybaby. Thank you. Right. So when you're in cold ice bath, you have to breathe a certain way to calm yourself down. It has to be done a certain way.

And the power is in the exhale. OK. So I want to just do a little thing with you right now. Let's do it together, to show this. want you to breathe in for four seconds through your nose, hold for four seconds and then breathe out for eight seconds. OK, do you want to count me down? Yeah. So you're going to go do it at home with us as well. That'd be fun. Breathing in one, two, three, four, holding one, two, three, four out one, two, three, four.

Five, six, seven, eight. Another one. One, two, three, four. Hold. One, two, three, four. Out. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. And then just think about your shoulders and your posture. Drop a reason down, relax it, relax your face a bit. I feel calmer already. There you go. As simple as that. And one of the first things that gets changed, you know, when we feel anxious. So if we're doing cold calls or about to go into a stressful meeting, whether it be internally or externally, one of the first things that changes unconsciously is your breathing. And reminding yourself and returning to the breath is a good way to bring yourself back to the present moment and the space that you're in. Andrew Huberman also has one where he does a double breath in through the nose.

Like that. That's just a little quick injection of calm for you. But really the big thing that you'll notice when you look at all these different breathwork exercises is it's all about the longer exhale. Yeah. So breathe in for a certain amount, hold it and then exhale. Cause you're trying to blow off the carbon monoxide. When you do that, your body calms down. Take it back to breath. I went on a men's wellness retreat. Bet you did. I did. And one of the things we did was like a, think it's called connected breathwork or I was like wave. Yeah, well, it was like, you're doing it, but then it's like very heavy on the the exhales. my God. It was like I was on drugs. My feet and my fingers started going cold and tingly. And afterwards, you just felt like like you'd been in this like vessel of happiness. You felt amazing. I think we we neglected so much. We're always in this fight and flight or dopamine addiction or what's next? What's next?

If you want to be truly focused and truly present, take it back to your breath. Take a moment. Pause. Think about your pace. Couple of bits of takeaway advice here. Four in, hold for four, out for eight. Do a few rounds of that and then check in with your body. On my shoulders relaxed is my jaw unclenched, my sack comfortably and then continue. Should we do one more for the road?
